Trestleboard for February 1999

Hope this finds all doing well. The January stated meeting focused on the 1998-99 Grand Master's Award of Excellence. The iniatives which Wilmette Lodge will pursue were discussed and chosen. I will be sending out an outline of those iniatives to the brethren. I will also arrange another sign-up sheet for some of the group outing iniatives. Please sign-up or contact me if you are interested.

January saw the lodge put on a second degree for our eager Fellowcraft. The exam was conducted in the lodge and the candidate recited the catechism flawlessly. It was a pleasure to see such a well-prepared candidate. Bro. Peter Lundberg obligated. Thank you Bro. Lundberg.

Our candidate will be making a presentation at our February stated meeting. While at refreshment, he will show the work he has completed on a Wilmette Park Lodge website. He will also be presenting some basic information on the internet. Please attend if e-mail, the web...etc. are intimidating or foreign to you.

The DDGM will be making his visit during our March stated meeting. As has been the case the past few years, his visit will coincide with the judging for the annual ritual competition. Accordingly, we will be having some ritual instruction on February 18 & 25. This will push our candidate's Third Degree back to March 18th. Please mark your calendar.

Finally, we will be having a Valentine Dinner on February 13th. The Four Spacious Men, a barbershop quartet, will be performing.
Refreshments 6:00 PM
Dinner 6:45 PM
Entertainment will follow.
Cost is $5.00 for adults, $2.00 for children. $1.00 savings with canned goods.
RSVP to myself at 847.506-9549 if interested.

Fraternally,

Bro. Steve Mick

Trestleboard for March 1999

Brethren:

Hello to all. We have been busy as a lodge. I will update you on February's events and look ahead to another active month in March.

The February stated meeting saw a very interesting presentation by our Fellowcraft who has put together a Wilmette Park Lodge #931 website. The internet address is:

www.angelfire.comindex.html

Our brother walked us through his work on the website, as well as basic information on how to access, navigate and utilize the internet. There was lively discussion and the evening could have gone much longer if not for the hour. Our "webmaster" has put a significant amount of time and effort into the Wilmette Park Lodge web page. I personally believe it is the most comprehensive and informative of the lodge websites that I have seen. Please try to check it out and provide suggestions, feedback, corrections...etc. We will be conducting the Third Degree for our webmaster brother in March. His name and vitals will be provided in next month's trestleboard so that he may be contacted directly. Please forward your thoughts on the website to myself until then.

February also saw our Valentine's Dinner. The turnout was good and all who attended had a nice evening of conversation and entertainment. Special thanks to Bro. Joe Chasey for arranging the music for the evening.

Looking forward, the DDGM, Bro. Don Dykinga, will be making his annual visit during our March 4th stated meeting. As mentioned previously, this coincides with the 7NE District competition for ritual proficiency. Under the expert tutelage of Bro. Jon Tompary, the officers have been practicing. Please try to make it to the meeting to greet Bro. Dykinga, as well cheer your officers on. RAH, RAH, RAH!!

The aforementioned Third Degree will be held on March 18th. PLEASE NOTE - the meeting will start at 7:00 PM. Due to the length of the ceremony, it was decided that starting time should be moved up one half hour. Also, there will be a Third Degree ritual rehearsal on March 11th. This will begin at 7:00 PM.

Finally, on a sad note, Bro. Wes Yates has passed away. He was just shy of his 91st birthday. Bro. Yates was raised three years ago and was quite active in spite of his years. In fact, he was a Steward last year. We valued his participation.

Fraternally,

Bro. Steve Mick

Freemasonry or Masonry is a fraternity formally established in 1717 in London, England. It is widely accepted among Masonic scholars that it arose from the stonemasons' guilds during the Middle Ages. It is an association or brotherhood of men who have banded together for mutual self-improvement, support, fellowship, and community betterment. Freemasonry is a private institution open to augmenting its membership; however, Masons are not permitted to actively solicit others to join the fraternity. A non-Mason must ask a Mason for a petition to join. Meetings are announced publicly; Masonic buildings are marked clearly and are listed in local phone directories throughout North America. The passwords and signs of recognition of modern Masonry are believed to date back to the building guilds of medieval Europe, where they served as proof of guild membership among the largely illiterate craftsmen. Freemasonry does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, or social class. It requires of its members a belief in God as part of the obligation of every responsible adult, but advocates no sectarian faith or practice. Similarly, religious, sectarian and political discussions are forbidden in Lodge rooms. Masons meet in a spirit of toleration and brotherhood.

April 1999

Hello Brethren,

Hope this finds all brethren near and far doing well. Here is your review of last month's events and a peek towards the rainy month of April.

Your lodge represented you well in the district competition that took place during the March stated meeting. The results of the competition are not in, but feedback was positive from the judges. More importantly, those of us in lodge are aware of the improvement in how the Opening 1-2-3 ritual is conducted. Thank you to the officers for putting in the necessary time to produce this development.

March also saw the raising of Bro. Michael Hoover. Bro. Hoover is our webmaster who has done such a fantastic job with the Wilmette Park Lodge website ( www.angelfire.com/il/wilmettepark/index.html) . We welcome the motivation and unique talents that he brings to us. The 3rd Degree would not have been possible without the help of brethren from other lodges. I won't name them all, but we recognize and appreciate the time they took to contribute to a piece of ritual that we get to conduct all too infrequently.

Regarding the website, comments and suggestions concerning content can be made directly at the site. There are icons to sign the Guestbook and leave a message or send Bro. Hoover an e-mail.

Looking ahead, the stated meeting will fall on April 1st. Please mark your calendars as attendance is often less than normal when the meeting happens to fall on the first day of the month. Bro. Bill Hilburn has generously donated a video tour of the Grand Lodge of England that he acquired on recent travels. The video will be shown during refreshments following the stated meeting. Thank you Bro. Hilburn.

Finally, on a very sad note, Wor. Bro. Maurice Teitel has passed away. As most of you know, Wor. Bro. Teitel was our Treasurer at the time of his passing. He was raised in 1984, moved to the East in 1989 and has been our Treasurer since 1990. We will miss his comforting presence, his humor and integrity. Maury requested to have a Masonic Funeral Service. Attendance was good at the service and the family was very appreciative. Thank you to all who were able to attend.

Fraternally,

Bro. Steve Mick

Lessons From The Geese

As each goose flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the birds that follow. By flying in a "V" formation, the whole flock adds 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew alone.

When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of flying alone. It quickly moves back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front of it.

When the lead goose tires, it rotates back into the formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front of it.

The geese flying in formation honk to encourage those in front to keep up their speed.

When one goose gets sick, wounded or shot down, two geese drop out of formation and follow it down to help and protect it. They stay with it until it dies or is able to fly again. Then, they launch out with another formation or catch up with the flock.

May 1999

Brethren,

Hello to all. Hope this finds all healthy and happy. Here is your monthly communication concerning lodge activities.

April was a relatively quiet month, but we did get some good news regarding the District Ritual Competition. WE WON! Congratulations to all officers that participated. Unfortunately, we were not able to compete in the area competition due to schedule conflicts. This is the first time that we have finished first in our district (though not the last I'm sure) and should be a tremendous source of pride for the lodge as a whole.

Thanks again to Bro. Bill Hilburn, who contributed a video tour of The Grand Lodge of England. Half of the video was shown following the April stated meeting. Reviews were excellent - thumbs up from all the brethren. We will show the other half of the video following another stated meeting in the future.

Looking forward, the stated meeting falls on May 6th. Come on out if we haven't seen you in a while. Also, a tour of the Masonic Children's Home has been arranged for Saturday, May 22nd at 10:00 AM. The tour should last roughly one hour and will include a walk- through of the facilities and visits with staff and the children themselves. All family members are welcome. I am really looking forward to the tour as I have not been to the home before and am eager to see first-hand the amazing work that is done there. If you are interested in joining the tour, try to give me a call so that I may inform the home of how many to expect. If you can not contact me, but are interested, we will meet in the lobby at 9:45 AM. The address is: 441 9th Avenue

LaGrange, IL

(708) 352-4240

Fast forwarding a bit more, we will be having a Pot Luck Dinner on Friday, June 11th. Mark your calendars. Entertainment is not set in stone yet, but will probably be a speaker from the Scottish Rite Speaker's Bureau. The main entrees and appetizers will be provided by the lodge and guests will bring side dishes and desserts. Please contact myself if you can contribute to the evening's fare.

The Road Not Taken

Two Roads diverged in a yellow wood

And Sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth

Then took the other, as just as fair

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

Trestleboard for June 1999

Dear Brethren,

Hope all is well. This month's communication will be fairly brief.

First, the date for our June dinner has changed. It will now be held on June 11th. The previous date conflicted with the Masonic Pilgrimage to Sullivan, Illinois.

The Masonic Children's Home outing, though not well attended, was very interesting. I encourage everyone to make a visit. The home is reasonably close for local brethren (LaGrange, Il) and well worth the time taken out of your busy schedules. The Grand Lodge of Illinois is considering having alternate sights for the annual pilgrimage, with Sullivan hosting one year and LaGrange the next. If this plan is adopted, next year will see LaGrange host and should be an excellent opportunity to visit.

On a sad note, Bro. Thomas E. McClenny has passed away. Bro. McClenny was residing in West Palm Beach, Fl when he passed away at the age of 74. He was raised on March 1, 1946.

Finally, Bro. Harold Lundberg has asked me to remind everyone of the Food Pantry basket. Donations have been slim lately.

July 1999

Dear Brethren,

I hope this month's communication finds everyone happy and healthy. As always, this update will bring everyone up to date on what has been happening in lodge and take a look toward future WP #931 activities.

June was a good month. In addition to the stated meeting, we had a potluck dinner on Friday, June 11th. The dinner was a success with good food contributed by all that attended and an informative demonstration by Bro. Mike Hoover. Bro. Hoover presented his work on our lodge website. This presentation proved enlightening for everyone, even those of us who are fairly familiar with the internet and our page. Bro. Hoover is always looking to improve the accessibility, content and aesthetics of the site. If you have not seen the website lately, I encourage you to revisit it and provide comments in the guestbook. The website has been moved to a new address to provide cleaner access. The former service cluttered our site with advertisements and the web address was somewhat difficult to remember. Our new site is sponsored by a masonic service and is cleaner and easier to remember. The new address is:

www.mastermason.com/wilmettepark

Looking forward, the stated meeting falls on the first day of the month once again. Please flag your calendars. I know it comes just before the holidays, but your presence is appreciated and makes the meetings richer in content.

I also wanted to provide additional dates further out for everyone to remember:

Thursday, July 22nd Bring your own BBQ dinner

Saturday, September 18th Past Master's Dinner

September ? Corn Roast

Saturday, November 6th Installation

Please contact me with questions and comments regarding these dates.

Finally, I wish all brethren and their families a happy Fourth of July holiday.

Bro. Steven Mick

Our Country's Flag

Our country's flag so fair

May its silken folds never be touched by an enemies' hand

Nor its bright stars dimmed by a foreign hand

May its true colors by heaven given

May its stars resplendent sheen

By all the nations of earth be seen

Shedding their twinkling rays of light

Telling that freedom is mans birthright

May it float oer land and sea

As a heaven light of liberty

Protect this flag as long as life

Protect it in peace, protect it in strife

Protect it in storm or battle array

Protect it by night, protect it by day

August 1999

Dear Brethren,

I hope everyone has emerged from the July heat in good form. Here is your monthly review of lodge activities and look forward to upcoming events.

Brother Joe Chasey, Senior Warden, was kind enough to organize and host the annual Bring-Your- Own-BBQ cookout on July 22nd. The fare was good and plentiful, as was the company. Thank you Brother Chasey for taking on this responsibility late in the game and doing an excellent job.

August will see only the stated meeting on August 5th. Jumping ahead to September, the Past Master's Dinner will take place on Saturday, September 18th. We would love to see some old familiar faces that we have not seen in a while. One of my goals as Worshipful Master was to increase the participation of our membership. I don't know that I have been very successful. Lodge is fun. Lodge is interesting. Though not set in stone yet, I hope to have one of our brethren come and display some of his collection of masonic artifacts. Come enjoy a good meal and interesting conversation.

Currently there is one other masonic organization utilizing the Wilmette temple for it's meetings. The Royal Arch Masons (RAM) have a chapter that meets on the second Tuesday of every month. Bro. Harold Lundberg was recently installed as High Priest. Many other WP #931 brethren also regularly attend the RAM meetings. Meetings are held at 7:30 PM, with a dinner beforehand at 6:30 PM. If interested, please inform Bro. Bill Crawford (847.251.3500) that you will be coming as he needs a head count for meal preparation. The cost of dinner is $7.00.

Finally, Brother John Tompary has expressed some reservations about continuing in his role as secretary next year. As we all know, John has done a superior job in this chair for many years. He has been a true cornerstone in the southeast of Wilmette Park #931. John has always gone above and beyond what was expected of him, providing heart-felt dialogue, guidance and vision. John will continue to be active in lodge and help transition the new secretary into office. It is important that we begin thinking about John's replacement, collectively and individually. The office demands a significant time commitment and good organizational skills. Please let John, Joe Chasey or myself know if you are interested or have a recommendation.

Peace to all until my next communication.

Fraternally,

Bro. Steve Mick

On the trestle board of life

Our duties are plainly shown

And if you follow the outline given

Our reward will be a crown

If you fail to follow the tracing

Of the lines that to us are given

We shall be doomed to darkness

Instead of a shining light in heaven

Let us take the square and compass

The land and setting maul

Follow the lines laid for us

And not by the wayside fall

When our chart of life is examined

By the great architect of all

He will say well done thou good and faithful

Come and dwell within my walls

Trestleboard

for

September 1999

Dear Brethren,

I hope everyone is doing well and making the most of the last days of summer. Here is your monthly update.

First, thank you Bro. Chasey, SW, for filling in for me in the east for the August stated meeting. From all accounts, you did an excellent job and it is obvious that the lodge is in more than capable hands next year. Good job.

Speaking of next year, for those of you attending the September stated meeting

(September 2), please come prepared with suggestions of potential candidates for the office

of Secretary next year. I am sure Bro. Chasey would appreciate some input on the matter. I feel it would be unfair for him to be left in the position of having to fill that chair by himself because the change is happening on his clock. In many ways, the Secretary is our conduit to the outside world and the Grand Lodge. We should all be involved with this transition. Thanks in advance.

Looking further ahead, the Past Master's Dinner will be held on Saturday, September 18th. Come out and enjoy a good meal and show your support for those who have given their time and effort in the east. In addition, Bro. Anthony Ciffone will be displaying and discussing some of his masonic artifacts. Bro. Ciffone is a dealer in antiquities and has acquired some interesting pieces through the years. He knows the history and symbolism of these pieces well and will be happy to answer questions.

I hope to see many of you over the course of September. If not, peace until my next update.

Trestleboard

for

October 1999

Dear Brethren,

I hope this finds everyone doing well. Here is your monthly update.

We had our Past Master's Dinner last month. Thanks to all who came. Special thanks to Bro. Anthony Ciffone who displayed and discussed some of the masonic artifacts from his collection. Bro. Ciffone did a fine job of explaining the symbolism and history of the pieces. We learned a fair bit about not only the pieces themselves, but also how craftsmanship differed during separate periods.

Looking forward, please note that our annual meeting is fast approaching. October 21st will be the date when the new officers are elected and the annual report given. Come out and show the incoming officers your support. Speaking of the incoming officers, mark the first Saturday in November (November 6th) in your calendars. This is the date of the installation. Bro. Joseph Chasey, incoming Worshipful Master, has worked hard to put together an excellent slate of installing officers and a nice evening of events. Let's show up and demonstrate to the new officers we appreciate the commitment they are making.

Bros. Chasey, H. Lundberg and myself will be attending the Grand Lodge meeting in Springfield, IL October 8th and 9th. Most masonic instruction manuals, texts, ritual pieces...etc. are available for sale. Let me know if there is anything you would like me to pick up for you while I am there.

On a sad note, Bro. Ed Coussens recently lost his wife Rava. Rava was always present at our social dinners and more than willing to help out wherever and whenever needed. She obviously was very supportive of Ed's dedication to masonry. We are sorry for your loss Ed and are grieving with you.

Finally, I have been remised in not extending my own appreciation for the kind words and correspondences my family and I received for the loss of our daughter Julia. Thank you.

Peace until my next communication.

Trestle Board

for

November 1999

Hello my brethren! You have before you my last trestle board as Worshipful Master. As always, I hope this finds all happy and healthy.

I would be lying if I did not admit to a certain sense of relief as my time in the east comes to an end. I will, however, actually kind of miss putting together this communication every month. The monthly duty is a good exercise in masonic exploration and discipline.

Enough of that. Let's review last month's activity. The annual meeting of the Grand Lodge of Illinois was held October 5th and 6th in Springfield, Il. If you have the time, I recommend attending this meeting at least once. The pomp and circumstance is impressive and, more importantly, serious, heart-felt dialogue concerning lodge business is facilitated. Springfield is a good host city to the meeting with ample hotel space and sights and activities to fill a couple of days' time.

October also saw the Wilmette Park #931 annual meeting. The slate of officers for the next year was elected. I will let Bro. Joseph Chasey, incoming Worshipful Master, present the slate in his first communication. The new officers have proven to be eager in their preparation and full of innovative ideas. I am confident that we are in good hands going forward. We had a visitor at our annual meeting. Bro. Roy Carter of Revelation Lodge #97, Yokosuka, Japan, came out and sat in on our meeting. Bro. Carter is doing a stint at Fort Sheridan as a Logistics Officer for the next three years. He narrowly avoided being appointed to fill a chair next year by Bro. Chasey.

Looking forward, I am sure you have all received your invitations to the WP #931 installation. We will gather on November 6th for this transition. Bro. Chasey has put together a nice evening which will start at 8:00 PM. Dessert will be provided after the ceremony.

A walk through rehearsal will take place at 6:30 PM the same night for all those being installed. Please try to be there if it applies.

Finally, a reminder that the stated meeting will still take place on the first Thursday of the month (November 4th). It would be easy to overlook it with the installation coming only two days later.

Peace until your next communication.

Fraternally,

Bro. Steven Mick

Are you an active member

The kind that would be missed,

Or are you just content

That your name is on the list?

Do you attend the meetings

And mingle with the flock,

Or do you stay at home

to criticize the knock?

Do you take an active part

To help the work along

Or are you satisfied to be

The kind that just belongs?

Do you ever go to visit

A member who is sick,

Or leave the work to just a few

And talk about the "clique"?

Think this over,

You know right from wrong,

Are you an active member

Or do you just belong?

TRESTLEBOARD

FOR

December, 1999

INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS A BIG SUCCESS

Fellow Craftsmen,

Congratulations to our new line of Masonic Officers for the year 2000 at Wilmette Park Lodge No. 931. You will find the names of Masons filling the stations and places for the upcoming year listed below. This was the 89th installation since the beginning of Wilmette Park Lodge.

I would like to start my year and first trestleboard as Master of the Lodge by thanking all the brethren and Officers of Wilmette Park Lodge No. 931 who will help me throughout my year. With help from my Officers, Past Masters and brethren this can and should be one of the best years ever. The installation ceremony on Saturday, November 6 was comprised of a five-member installation team of all Past Masters with Rt. Wor. Bro. Russell Johnson as Installing Officer, Rt. Wor. Bro. Donald Dykinga as Marshall our own Rt. Wor. Bro. Edward Rund as Senior Deacon, Rt. Wor. Bro. John Valencik as Chaplain and Wor. Bro. Benjamin Zwick as Secretary who performed the ceremony in a unique and impressive manner in conjunction with an Escort which was provided by the Austin Commandry No. 84. We were especially honored to have Rt. Wor. Bro. John Valencik deliver the Paul Revere charges in a superb manner and in such a way that it will not be forgotten by myself or those present. The reception following the installation consisted of various desert contributions from the Officers and many of our Past Masters where our many guests spent an enjoyable evening conversing.

Wilmette Park's Holiday Party will be held on Saturday December 18th at 6:30PM and all members, family and friends are invited. In addition to a wonderful catered dinner, we will have a visit from Santa. If bringing children please bring a gift for each child of no more than $10.00. If you bring a contribution for our Food Bank, the cost of the dinner will be a modest $6.00 per person: or $7.00 each without a donation.

WE NEED PETITIONS! Why not bring a prospect or two to the dinner?

At our December meeting we will open 1,2,3 as practice for the annual ritual competition. We were first place in the 7th North East District last year and I am sure we can repeat this feat by maintaining and improving our level of proficiency if we start early in December.

The location of the District Breakfast held on the first Sunday of each month has been changed from Jaspers in Glenview to Maxwell's in Morton Grove. The District Breakfast is an excellent way to find out the activities that are occurring in the other Lodges in our district . It starts at 8:00AM and usually lasts for about an hour.

We are sorry to report the passing of Bro. Harold Lundberg's wife Shirley. She was a dear person who was very active in supporting our lodge.

Personal goals for our Lodge during my year in the East are to increase membership, induce inactive members to become active again, strengthen our ritual abilities and adhere to our planned budget.

Fraternally,

Joseph P. Chasey,W.M.

DEFINITION OF FREE MASONRY

Freemasonry is a beautiful system of morals veiled in allegory, and illustrated by symbols. Its Tenets are Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth. Its Cardinal Virtues are Temperance Fortitude, Prudence, and Justice. Its religion, if religion it may be called, is an unfeigned belief in the one living and true God.
