Masonic Flag Ceremony (as performed at Henry Lodge No. 57, AF&AM, Fairfax, Virginia)

Updated: Mon Nov 18 07:15:20 EST 2002

W.M. Bro. Marshal (Mar. rises), under the escort of the Senior (S.D. rises) and Junior Deacons (J.D. rises), you will present the flag of our country at the altar.
Mus. begins playing patriotic music (Chester, Columbia the Gem of the Ocean, You're a Grand Old Flag, My Days Have Been So Wondrous Free, etc.) Mar. goes to NW corner and takes flag (W.M. gives ***); S.D. and J.D. take rods and go to West (S.D. on N., J.D. on S.) and stand in front of S.W. facing east; Mar. with flag goes to W. and stands between them, directly in front of S.W. Then all three advance to altar.
W.M. All citizens of the United States will join me in pledging allegiance to the flag of our country.
Brn. (Pledge of Allegiance given; Mus. rises for Pledge then re-seats himself)
W.M. Bro. Mar., post the colors in the East.
Mus. resumes playing. Mar., flanked by J.D. and S.D., advances along N. side of Lodge to the East. Ds. ground rods; Mar. posts colors in flag stand to R. of W.M.
Mus. plays patriotic song (National Anthem, America, America the Beautiful, etc.). Brn. sing. At end, Mus. rises to salute flag with other Brn.
W.M. * (Ds. and Mar. return to seats)
It is not clear that this ceremony will be performed in the future; at the Grand Annual Communication in 2002 November, the Grand Lodge indicated that it was "not desirable" for the US Flag to be anywhere but the East of the Lodge at any time, and thus cannot be presented with ceremony in the form given above.
