Geography links

Updated: Fri Jun 30 09:54:51 PDT 2000

The [new!] tags were updated as of 01 Jan 1999.

The links in this page were first derived from:

  • a 25 September 1995 Washington Post business section (p. 19) article by Margot Williams.
  • a Post article of 29 July 1996 by Victoria Shannon, with locality information.
  • a Post article of 01 August 1996 containing notes on Web cameras collected by Carol Light in the CyberSurfing column (appears Thursdays in the Style section; send your interesting Web page discoveries to the reporters, Karen Marrero or Joel Garreau).
A graphical browser is highly advised (sorry, lynx users).

Web Cameras

  • Leave your heart in San Francisco
  • We'll always have Paris
  • Oxonians might skip this view of Cambridge, UK
  • There's a re-aimable view of Honolulu, Hawaii from the Aloha Tower
  • "Eighty-seven square miles, surrounded by reality" could describe Hollywood, but it also describes Washington, DC
  • Other cameras in North America, provided by the University of Michigan (may be weather-related, though)
  • And cameras in the rest of the world

Also check out Yahoo! for more web cameras (but a lot are inside and not related to geography); Yahoo also has links to television stations, many of which operate cameras with city views, such as this view of Minneapolis, courtesy of WCCO television. (Why Minneapolis? I grew up in the Twin Cities--to be sure, I'd rather have a view of St. Paul...)

The December 1996 issue of Sky & Telescope listed more camera sites at Tommy's List and at Don's World. Of course, there may be duplications among these.

Getting There

  • If you've found someplace you'd like to visit, Travelocity can help you get there.

  • Or perhaps you'd like to get there cheaper with Global Discount Travel Services.

  • You might also find flight and fare information at Flifo.

  • And if you'd like to track your flight (or see if your boss is going to return on schedule), Flight Tracker is where to get help.

  • A new way to get low prices on unsold airline seats is being introduced on 6 April 1998 by priceline.com (yes, the ".com" is part of the name). For flexible leisure travelers only, you name the price you're willing to pay and when you would like to travel. (They also offer deals on cars and mortgages and maybe other stuff, too.)

  • Of course, you might want to check the FAA's web site, which has a section on air safety and incidents reported by airlines, including the plane you are on. Maybe you'd rather stay home and look at the Web camera for where you were thinking of going...

  • Destinations Unlimited claims to find unusual bargains in air fares due to errors by airlines, unpublicized fare cuts, etc.

  • More ways to fly cheap [IMAGE] are provided by BestFares, LowestFare, 1travel, and Cheaptickets. [new!] (Mon Mar 22 06:08:25 PST 1999)

  • For frequent flyers, WebFlyer offers various services, including mileage tracking, bonus lists, and super-cheap travel specials.

  • A subscription service page for low-price travel is provided by Best Fares, but some of its services are free.

Courier Travel

An interesting way to travel cheaply is as an air courier. Your baggage allowance is used to transport documents/whatever, but you may take carry-on luggage. And fares are low.

One may also purchase an information manual on courier travel from
Expanding Horizons
4758 Ridge Road #252
Cleveland, Ohio 44144

The price is $9.95. Sorry, no guarantees from this site on what you will get from them.
