One evening at a Lodge meeting, a brother was spotted by a Past Master playing with a pack of cards. This was duly reported to the Lodge Committee and the offending brother was summoned to appear before them to give an explanation of his deplorable behaviour.

• The Ace reminds me of the Supreme Being.
• The Two reminds me of the Two great Pillars which were placed at the porchway or entrance to King Solomon’s Temple.
• The Three reminds me that there are Three who rule the Lodge; the Master and the Senior and Junior Wardens.
• The Four reminds me of the Four Cardinal Winds of Heaven.
• The Five reminds me of the Five Noble Orders of Architecture, namely the Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian and Composite.
• The Six reminds me of the Six Principles of our Order, namely Brotherly Love, Relief, Truth, Faith, Hope and Charity.
• The Seven reminds me of the Seven liberal Arts and Sciences, namely Grammar, Rhetoric, Logic, Arithmetic, Geometry, Music and Astronomy.
• The Eight reminds me of the symbol of infinity, to demonstrate that charity for a mason has no limits.
• The Nine reminds me of all the Working Tools; namely the 24 inch gauge, Common Gavel and Chisel, The Square, Level and Plumb Rule, The Skirret, Pencil and Compass.
• The Ten reminds me of the Ten Commandments on which our Order is based.
• The Jack reminds me of the Princes of the Household who went to view the completed Temple.
• The Queen reminds me of a Widow who bore a Famous Son.
• The King reminds me of King Solomon, the principle figure of our Order.
