What is Really Simple Syndication (RSS)?
RSS is a way a website can feed some of its updated content live in real time. For instance, this trestleboard... if you were to subscribe to its RSS, then on a regular schedule, your computer would look for our new events and display them on applications (sofware) such as Windows Sidebar (which is standard with Windows Vista or 7) or Google Desktop.
In the past, you would have to make phone calls, or wait until you or your Secretary recieves a communication that another body is having an event, or you would have to "surf" other body's websites looking to see if there's an event you'd like to attend. RSS automatically downloads that information and could display it on your desktop (the one Windows refers to, the main screen of your computer). After subscription, all you'd have to do is power up your computer, turn your monitor on and view what it finds. In Sidebar, that will show you 4 entries at a time and rotate new ones about every 15 seconds. If you see something that you like, you can double left click on that item and your internet browser (i.e. Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox for instance) will open up to enlighten you with further details (if there are any). |
