THE DIFFERENCE

I got up early one morning
And rushed right into the day;
I had so much to accomplish
That I didn't take time to pray.

Problems just tumbled about me
And heavier became each task.
"Why doesn't GOD help me?" I wondered
He answered, "You didn't ask."

I wanted to see joy and beauty
But the day toiled on, gray and bleak
I wondered why GOD didn't show me,
He said, "But you didn't even seek."

I tried to come into GOD's presence;
I used all my keys on the lock.
GOD gently and lovingly chided,
"My child, you didn't knock."

I woke up early this morning,
And paused before entering the day.
I had so much to accomplish,
That I had to take time to pray.

If God hath made this world so fair,
Where sin and death abound,
How beautiful, beyond compare,
Will paradise be found.

James Montgomery

PRAYER

I do not ask to walk smooth paths
Nor bear an easy load.
I pray for strength and fortitude
To climb the rock-strewn road.

Give me such courage I can scale
The hardest peaks alone,
And transform every stumbling block
Into a stepping stone.

Love that is hoarded molds at last
Until we know some day
The only thing we ever have
Is what you give away.

Lous Ginsberg

PARADOX

It is in loving-not in being loved,-
The heart is blest;
It is in giving-not in seeking gifts,-
We find our quest.

If thou art hungry, lacking heavenly food,-
Give hope and cheer.
If thou are sad and wouldst be comforted,-
Stay sorrow's tear.

Whatever be thy longing and thy need,-
That do thou give;
So shall thy soul be feed, and thou indeed,
Shalt truly live.

Faithful faithful to every trust,
Honestly honestly in every deed,
Righteously righteously and Justly just:
This is the whole of the good man's creed.

There is no dark despair that cannot be
Evicted from the heart's Gethsemane;
for faith is always more than unbelief,
And vibrant courage triumphs over grief.

Mary E. Mc Cullough

MY TASK

To be honest, to be kind;
To earn a little and to spend a little less;
To make upon the whole a family happier
for his presence;
To renounce when that shall be necessary
and not to be embittered;
To keep a few friends, but those without
capitulation;
Above all, on the same grim conditions,
to keep friends with himself-
Here is a task for all that man has of
Fortitude and delicacy.

Robert Louis Stevenson

WHAT I LIVE FOR

I live for those who love me, for those who
know me true;
For the heaven that smiles above me, and
awaits my spirit too;
For the cause that lacks assistance, for the
wrong that needs resistance,
For the future in the distance, and the good
that can do.

George Linnaeus Banks

The human hear is all I need,
For I have found God ever there-
Love is the one sufficient creed,
And comradeship the purest prayer.

Robert Norwood

A CREED

There is a destiny that makes us brothers;
None goes his own way:
All that we send into the lives of others
Comes back into our own.

I care not what his temples or his creeds,
One thing holds firm and fast-
That into his fateful heap of days and deeds
The soul of man is cast.

Edwin Markham
