In the above picture you will note several famous masons, The first President of the United States George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Buzz Aldrin, Harry S. Truman, John Wayne, Charles Lindbergh, Will Rogers. These are but a few Masons there are many, many more not pictured. Masonry is made up of all classes of men the rich, the famous, the talented, the educated not so educated; Named among the ranks of Masonry are those who are readily recognizable from John Hancock - 1 of 9 signers of the Declaration of Independence, to Edgar J. Hoover - Director of the FBI, to Sam Houston the 2nd, 4th President of the Republic of Texas, to writer Rudyard Kipling, to Gerald Ford - President of the U.S., to George VI - King of England during World War II, to Louis Armstrong - Jazz Musician, and Nat "King" Cole singer extra ordinary. These are just a few of the great men you can read about, all great men Masons who made up this great country of ours.
The following lists are far from complete. Denslow's 10,000 Famous Freemasons, although dated, is worth consulting.
George Washington, James Monroe, Andrew Jackson, James K. Polk, James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, James A. Garfield, William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Warren G. Harding, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman and Gerald R. Ford. (Lyndon Johnson was a Mason but never went beyond the Entered Apprentice degree, however.) Franklin, Jackson, and Truman were all Grand Masters of Masons (of Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Missouri, respectively).
Also Sir Winston Churchill, Simon Bolivar, Bernardo O'Higgins, Giuseppe Garibaldi, J. Edgar Hoover.
The American evangelist Billy Graham is not a Freemason. This topic was explored on the Freemasonry Listserv in 1996, and one of the masons posting there copied the content of snail-mail he received from the Billy Graham organization on this subject. Graham has never been a mason, but the letter stated that he respects the Craft's principles. I'm sure his people added that bit because so many Christian evangelicals in this country are antimasonic. He is not.
