Colonel, 37th Regt., New Jersey Infantry, U.S.V., at the battle of Petersburg, Va., in 1864. Brevet Brigadier General, U.S.V., March 13, 1865, for "gallant and meritorious service before Petersburg." U.S. Minister to Spain 1890-92.
