Peter Angelo Cavicchia, a Representative from New Jersey; born in Roccamandolfi, Province of Campobasso, Italy, May 22, 1879; immigrated to the United States in 1888 with his parents, who settled in Newark, N.J.; attended the public schools; was graduated from the American International (formerly French-American) College, Springfield, Mass., in 1906 and from the law department of the New York University, New York City, in 1908; was admitted to the bar in 1909 and commenced practice in Newark, N.J.; also served as director and counsel for several building and loan associations; appointed supervisor of inheritance tax of Essex County in 1917; Served as Grand Venerable of The Order of the Sons of Italy of New Jersey 1915-17 ; member of the Newark Board of Education 1917-1931, serving as president 1924-1926; professor of law and trustee of Mercer Beasley School of Law (now part of Rutgers University), Newark, N.J., 1925-1931; elected as a Republican to the Seventy-second, Seventy-third, and Seventy-fourth Congresses (March 4, 1931-January 3, 1937); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1936 to the Seventy-fifth Congress; resumed the practice of law and again served as supervisor of inheritance tax for Essex County, N.J., 1937-1956; chairman of Central Planning Board of Newark, 1946-1957; died in Belleville, N.J., September 11, 1967; interment in Fairmount Cemetery, Newark, N.J.
