Henry Kent Hewitt of Hackensack, N.J., born 1887, Class of 1907 Naval Academy; Navy Cross 1919 for distinguished service as C.O. of U.S.S. Cummings; gunnery officer Pennsylvania; instructor at Naval Academy and member of Staff Naval War College; C.O. of Indianapolis; Commander Cruisers Atlantic Fleet 1941; Rear Admiral 1 Dec. 1940, Vice Admiral 17 Nov. 1942, Admiral 3 April 1945. 

He was Commander of Western Naval Task Force, Mediterranean Fleet, North African Campaign, 1942; Commander of All Amphibious Forces, Sicilian Campaign, 1943; Commander of the U.S. Eight Fleet, Invasion of France, D-Day, June 6, 1944.
