"Organization" plates have been made an option in South Dakota this year. They are available at your County Treasurer's office as are the standard vehicle license plates. The basic cost of the two types is the same. Early and late fees of $10 apply to both types of license plates. Apart from visual appearance, the two types of license plates are different in how they are affected by the sale of the vehicle:
Standard plates stay with the vehicle when the vehicle is sold.
Organization plates stay with the person when the vehicle is sold.
Therefore, the purchase of organization plates requires an additional expense of $15 at the County Treasurer's office. This is because holders of such plates must purchase and hold in readiness a 4" X 7" document called a form MV954: SOUTH DAKOTA TEMPORARY PERMIT. So, when organization plates are removed from a vehicle that has been sold, possession of this document will allow the buyer a period of 15 days in which to put permanent plates on the vehicle.
For decals from the Grand Lodge office, a contribution of $25 (or more) will be used to support the MMSAT program. The plates and decals are good for five years.
