History of Queen Beatrice Grand Chapter

Queen Beatrice Grand Chapter was organized on May 3, 1969,  The name was selected in honor of Sister Beatrice Hudson.  The first officers of Queen Beatrice Grand Chapter were George Hudson-Grand Patron, Rosie Humphries-Grand Matron, Gloria Thomas-Associate Grand Matron, Vernon Williams-Associate Grand Patron, Grace Bond-Grand Secretary, Freddie Smelley-Grand Treasurer, and Dorthy Young-Grand Conductress.  They were elected to serve for two terms.  On June 20, 1969, Queen Beatrice Grand Chapter was adopted by the Most Worshipful St. James Grand Lodge A.F.&A.M. under the leadership of Brother John D. Means as Grand Master.  The Grand Chapter later petitioned to the Supreme Grand Chapter, O.E.S. for a charter, which was granted on August 11, 1970 in Gary Indiana.

History of Candace Chapter #10

On November 4, 2000 former members of Arquilla Chapter #56 affiliated with Queen of Sheba Grand Chapter working under the Most Worshipful United Grand Lodge met to discuss the formation of a new chapter to support the growth of that jurisdiction.  On December 2, 2000 dispensation was granted by the Honorable Charles J. Clark 33o

The officers appointed were Worthy Matron -  Latoya Land, Worthy Patron - Michael Only, Associate Matron - Ebony Only, Secretary - Pateska Woods, Treasurer - Rosetta Lee, Conductress - Iris Williams, Associate Conductress - Vivian Appleton, Warder - Kellie Wrice.

On March 10, 2001 we learned that the Most Worshipful United Grand Lodge was significantly in arrearage on Cook County taxes and as a result the building located 7832 South Union was sold from under us to an unknown organization.  The leadership of Candace Chapter under advisement from their membership began a search for a new home.

We were happy to find Queen Beatrice Grand Chapter and Most Worshipful St. James Grand Lodge working toward goals similar to our own.  We petitioned this Grand Chapter for dispensation which was granted on March 23, 2001.  Our chapter showing itself worthy in its works was granted their charter at the September 2001 Grand Session and officers for 2001-2002 remained in their respective offices until the December 2001 election.

Who were the Candace's?

Candace means Queen Mother in Meroitic and the Candaces were Queen Mothers of Ancient Nubia.  There were a total of 16 queens in the line of Candace; 10 ruled alone and 6 with their husbands.

Additional references to Candace can also be found in the Holy Bible, Acts 8:27.
